Obituary for John Richard Shand

John Richard Shand, age 70, a resident of Danbury, WI passed away on November 1, 2022 at home with his loved ones by his side.

John was born on August 26, 1952 in Minneapolis, MN to parents John and Beverly (Aronson) Shand. John graduated from Burnsville High School in 1970, where he ran cross country and was captain of the chess team. After graduating, John attended St. Olaf College, the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy, and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where he earned his DDS degree in 1982.

John lived in Burnsville for many years, most of which were at his home in Ville Du Parc. Once retired, he moved with his wife, Louise, permanently to their lake home in Danbury.

John was a self-employed dentist in South Minneapolis from 1982 to 2020. He retired in August 2020. His care for people extended beyond dentistry and he was often found conversing as much as he was working. He was beloved by his patients and staff.

John loved the lake life on Big McGraw. Whether it was having a cocktail on the dock, riding in the pontoon, game nights with neighbors, listening to loons at sunset, or walks with Louise, he truly enjoyed and appreciated every moment. John was always the life of the party and made sure to share his bear joke (and sometimes more than once). Much of his time would also be occupied with home remodeling projects and endless wiring runs at home or the cabin. He always looked forward to winter vacations with Louise to Mexico and the Caribbean. He had many memorable moments sailing the Apostle Islands, hunting pheasants in Currie, and hunting deer in Cloquet. But most of all, his greatest joy was spending time with family, friends, and neighbors. He adored his wife dearly, was very proud of his three sons, and he loved his family with all of his heart. He will be remembered as a kind and gracious man.

John is preceded in death by his parents; brother, David Shand; parents-in-law, Harold and Marcella Ruppert; brother-in-law, Doug Ruppert; and sister-in-law, Ceil Mickelson.

John will be forever missed by his loving wife, Louise; children, Adam (Annie) Shand, Aron (Elyse) Shand, John Paul (Kara) Shand; grandchildren, Carolynn, Tatum, Mason, Nora, John Tristan and Lilly; siblings, Nancy (Jack) White, Tom Shand, Debbie Holton and Sandy Shand; other family members, Diane (Jim Swatosh) Ruppert, Gary (Jackie) Ruppert, Dan (Sherry) Ruppert, Steph Ruppert, Mary (Chuck) Ullery, Carol (Pat) Ford, Kathy (Jesse) Logero, Gary Mickelson, Jan Ruppert; many nieces and nephews; along with other relatives and friends.

The family wants to give a special thank you to M Health Cancer Clinic and all of the wonderful family, friends, and Big McGraw Lake neighbors involved in John’s care.
